Hickory

Hickory is a fun widely available domestic hardwood. We use “calico” Hickory which has contrasting heartwood and sapwood and brings out some style. It is reminiscent of the wild west with the colors and patterns of grain. This wood is fairly hard without weighing too much which makes it an ideal deck box candidate. It is also a less expensive option which is a big boon to those looking for a bespoke deckbox on a budget. We finish Hickory deckboxes using very fine sandpaper down to 320 grit which gives a smooth texture but still feels like wood, then coat lightly in boiled linseed oil to bring out the character without changing the look of this classic north American hardwood.

This wood takes Dye fairly well so if you are looking for a less expensive hardwood to get finished in a unique color this might be a very good starting point. Hickory is harder than Poplar, finishes better than Ash and is less expensive than White Oak, so if you are looking for that deep green, blue, or grey deckbox that nature just has not given us as a natural option, we can help you out.

Hickory also sometimes seen as Pecan is not listed in the IUCN red list or the CITES appendices so it is a great feel good about the environment option with a side of American grown pride.
