Ebony wood is a classic wood sought after for over 300 years, and in that time mankind has literally made extinct 2 different sub species of Ebony and put all features of the classically thought of “jet black heavy as a stone” tree and all others like the Ebony tree in perilous danger. The funny thing is true Gabon or Cameroon Ebony has almost no visible grain pattern and is frequently miss-identified as plastic, I am not even kidding.
At Pezui we won’t use Ebony, not as trim, not for a full deck box, not even if you pay us. We cannot support humans continuing to decimate another species for something mythical, especially when the average Joe does not even know what the real thing is.
On this page we have many boxes made of poplar, white oak, or white ash that get dyed with a high quality black dye that seeps deep into the wood. If you purchase one of the dyed boxes you will also be making a donation to help the IUCN protect the real Ebony trees from illegal deforestation. If this upsets you, you are an asshole. If on the other hand you just want an amazing deck box that is black as night or black with some character we have some great deals on deck boxes and you can feel good about doing something positive for the environment.
Current available boxes for sale in Ebony finish:
Elder Custom – $75.00 made from poplar and Black Italian leather lined; with 2″ thick black leather belting strap using antiqued nickel snaps. This box was literally one of the first boxes we made at Pezui and is used for many of the photo shots of black boxes. One side pictured never completely dyed due to how poplar accepts stains, but it has character where it counts and feels like an old litch possess it.

Elder Custom – $75.00 made from white Oak then Black Italian leather lined; with 1 1/2″ black leather belting strap utilizing antiqued nickel snaps. This box was not originally supposed to even become black but we had a dye mishap and the results were fairly fascinating. Since Oak did not respond to the stain at all like expected and it made one hell of a mess this is going to be a very limited item. Also it is very challenging to get good pictures of it; it does not have the red tint that is observed in the pictures it has a base grey/blond with dark black.
